The Institute for Musicology in Budapest fulfils a triple role: 

1. Research
2. Archiving of national collections, administration and supervision of data repositories
3. Organising professional events, conferences and concerts, of which – naturally – the load-bearing pillar is research.

The Institute houses the Budapest Bartók Archives, the Central Archives for Hungarian Folk Music and Folk Dance and the Archives for 20th–21st-Century Hungarian Music, as well as musical instruments of historic value.
